Homeopathic treatment
Before starting any sort of treatment, it is necessary for both the patient and
the doctor to understand the cause of sciatica.
Sciatica is not a disease but a symptom of the sciatic nerve being irritated or
being compressed by any mass or overgrowth along its course. The pain of sciatica
is seen in people due to numerous reasons. So, a physician has to work on the main
causative factor.
As the pain of sciatica becomes unbearable, it becomes the first priority for the
homeopath to provide relief to the patient from this unbearable pain.
Most of the sufferers rely on allopathic analgesics for pain relief but painkillers
never cure the problem; and moreover land the sufferer in further health problems
which includes serious side effects including damage to stomach, liver and kidneys.
Homeopathy has a vast repertory of sciatica medicines but which remedy will work
in which case of sciatica depends upon a lot of factors which is the domain of an
experienced homeopath.
For example, if the patient is suffering from pain, when he begins to move and gets
relief when he is walking, Rhus toxicodendron is the preferred remedy. Similarly,
in cases where there is right sided severe sciatic pain, Colocynth is used.
Symptoms such as pain in the limbs, numbness, pain with least movement, inability
to walk are specifically seen improving with homeopathic treatment; minimal chance
of recurrence is an additional benefit.
The remedies not only help in fighting the cause of the problem but also make the
person’s body strong enough to prevent further recurrences. They work deep down
at the constitutional level and protect the body from damages.
Homoeopathy helps in treating the acute cases where the remedies are prescribed
on the basis of the pain, factors related to the modalities of the pain and so on.
In treating chronic pain of sciatica the constitutional medicine is given in addition
to acute remedies.
So it is the sole duty of the doctor to understand the patient’s need and the
area where he or she requires more help and provide them with the appropriate remedy.
As every individual is different, the remedy so selected, turns out to be unique
and different for every person. It is up to a skilled homeopath how he evaluates
the multitude of factors and symptoms in determination of the most effective remedy
while addressing the underlying disorder of the patient.
Homeopathy offers a distinct approach to the individual who suffers from sciatica.
Whatever is the cause of sciatica, remedies help to alleviate the pain and other
symptoms related to sciatica like numbness, stiffness and weakness of the affected
part.
The most common cause of sciatica is compression of nerve due to slipped intervertebral
disc; here also homeopathy is able to treat the pain very effectively and rectifies
the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.
Homeopathy has the power to release compression off the nerve and soothe it to work
normally. The remedies are well designed to deal with any kind of nerve pain without
the help of pain killers.
Homeopathy is the only mode of treatment that has shown overwhelming positive response
in treating sciatica. In my opinion it should be the first treatment option as there are
specific remedies that can be prescribed.
With homeopathic treatment there is:
- No need to take harmful drugs
- No need to endure painful physiotherapy
To sum up, homeopathic treatment in a case of sciatica is:
- Fast and effective
- Safe and simple
- Totally natural; completely free from side effects
Homeopathy has 192 remedies for treating sciatica pain. This is a big number; it
is because it treats symptoms based on individuality of the patient. There are different
remedies for different patients depending upon their behaviors, attitudes, mental
state, sleeping patterns, lifestyles and of course, the symptoms of the disease.
Every patient puts his own stamp on the disease so the remedies which would cure
them have to be different.
It is nearly impossible to list all the remedies for sciatica as each remedy carries
a rider which explains the kind of patients that it is most suitable for. It is
recommended to consult a professional doctor for prescription who would analyze
your symptoms and then apply the best suited remedies.
Hence, every individual suffering from sciatica must consider homeopathy as first
choice to deal with sciatica without any side effects.

What is sciatica
In sciatica there is pain in one or both the buttocks; the pain usually extending
down the leg and may reach upto the feet.
The pain occurs due to compression of the sciatic nerve (the longest peripheral
nerve) which runs down from the buttocks to the entire length of the legs.
The pain may affect a part of the sciatic nerve or the entire length.
Causes
- Compression of the sciatic nerve i.e. pressure on the sciatic nerve due to:
- Slipped intervertebral disc.
- Sleeping on very soft mattress.
- Poor posture.
- Muscular strain.
- Obesity i.e. being over-weight.
- Prenancy with the fetus in the uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve.
- Wearing high heels.
- Inflammation of the sciatic nerve due to osteoarthritis.
Symptoms
- The pain may affect the entire length of the sciatic nerve or a particular part
of the nerve.
- The pain may radiate down the buttock to the thigh and down the leg and sometimes
going to the foot.
- Usually one side is affected but the pain may alternate from side to side or both
the sides may also be affected.
- Sometimes, the pain is associated with numbness and weakness of the affected part.
- The character of pain may be severe, mild, burning, stitching, shooting, piercing,
continuous, intermittent and so on. In homeopathy there are different remedies for
different types of pain.
Lab investigations
- A doctor confirms the diagnosis of sciatica by doing straight-leg-raising test in
which the leg is raised to a 45 degrees angle.
- X-ray.
- MRI.
- CT scan.
Consult a doctor if
- Pain is very severe and debilitating.
- Along with pain there is weakness of the leg or foot. It usually indicates that
there is some more serious neurological problem.
Chiropractic treatment
In this type of treatment the spine and surrounding soft tissues are manipulated
to reduce the pressure on sciatic nerve.
Home remedies
Teas made from meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) or white willow (Salix alba) may
relieve joint pains.
Muscular spasm can be made better by black cohosh (Cimicifuga reacemosa).
Osteopathy & sciatica
In osteopathic treatment for sciatica pressure on sciatic nerve is relieved by soft-tissue
massage and positioning.
Home remedies
- Alternate cold and hot fomentation can be tried for 30 minutes 2 to 3 times daily.
- Heavy objects should be pushed rather than pulled.
- Do not pick up anything heavier than 10 pounds.
- The weight of the objects should be taken in your bent legs and arms and not in
your back.
- During an acute attack sleep with a pillow under the knees.
Prevention
- When sitting the height of the chair should be such that the feet are flat on the
floor and not crossed. The knees should be a little higher than the hips.
- The chair must have a firm back support and one should sit with the back straight
against it.
- For sleeping a firm mattress should be used. One must sleep on the back or side
with knees bent. One must not sleep on the stomach.
