Homeopathic treatment
The way human body functions is not very simple and all the functions are actually
controlled by various hormones. Therefore, hormones play a major role in harmonious
functioning of our bodies. Various hormones are continuously adjusting to slightest
variations and changes taking place in the body. If there is a hormonal imbalance
due to any reason for that matter polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS or
PCOD), it has the potential to create a lot of problems.
A systematically selected homeopathic remedy has the capacity to correct hormonal
imbalance due to poly cystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS or PCOD) by stimulating
the glands to secrete various hormones in the required manner. Thus, homeopathy
is helping the body itself to correct the problem of hormonal imbalance by harmonizing
the hormonal environment of the body. Also the remedies would help in the regression
of ovarian cysts.
In conventional medicine or allopathy, Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) which
usually consists of progesterone or birth control pills OCPs (progestrone plus estrogen),
is done to tackle PCOS or PCOD. Sometimes
fertility drugs are also prescribed to induce ovulation. This actually makes the
hormone producing glands more sluggish as the body starts depending on externally
introduced hormones. Eventually the glands stop functioning altogether with increased
need for externally introduced hormones. Also HRT is associated with a lot of dangerous
side effects.
In contrast, homeopathy does not use any hormones but the remedies work by stimulating
the glands to produce the required amount of hormones thus curing the problem at
the root. Thus our treatment for hormonal imbalance is extremely safe and acts at
the level of psycho-neuro-endocrinal axis.
History of the patient is very important in a case of hormonal imbalance due to
PCOS or PCOD. The patient should give an
exhaustive history which should cover the emotional symptoms, life situation, relationships,
anxieties, stresses, fears and so on. This helps the homeopathic doctor to select
the most suitable remedy which has amazing power to correct the hormonal imbalance
and cure this problem and in effect curing many undesirable signs and symptoms.

What are ovaries & how do they function
The ovaries are a pair of almond-shaped organs which are located in lower abdomen
in the pelvis. There is one ovary on each side of uterus. Further each ovary contains
thousands of eggs. Till menopause every month one or more eggs starts to grow in
a small cyst like structure known as follicle. When the egg is mature, the follicle
ruptures and releases the egg and this process is known as ovulation. This egg is
then carried to the uterus with the help of tube like structures called fallopian
tubes.
Also ovaries produce two hormones estrogen and progesterone. While the egg is maturing,
estrogen is produced to help thicken the lining of the uterus in case the egg is
fertilized and grows into an embryo. After the rupture of the follicle the ovaries
produce progesterone to help the uterus prepare for a fertilized egg. If no pregnancy
occurs, the level of progesterone decreases and menstruation occurs.
What is polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease
Polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease develops when egg follicles get trapped just
under the surface of the ovary and thereby are unable to release their eggs, thus
forming into multiple small cysts.
It was originally described by Stein and Leventhal in the year 1935. They described
it as a syndrome which has the following features:
- Absence of menstruation (Amenorrhea)
- Increase in facial hair growth (Hirsutism)
- Obesity
- Enlarged ovaries having multiple cysts (Polycystic)
This syndrome is usually more prevalent in the young women in the reproductive period.
It is a complex disorder characterized by excessive production of hormones known
as androgens by the ovaries and the adrenal glands. Due to this the ovarian follicles
fail to mature.
Signs & symptoms
- Increase in the body weight (Obesity)
- Abnormalities of menstruation : The patient can suffer from scanty menstruation
(Oligomenorrhea), absence of menstruation (Amenorrhea) and infertility. The patient
usually comes with the complaints of irregular menses and says she is not getting
her periods for 3-4 months.
- Feeling of pressure or fullness on one side of the lower abdomen.
- Sharp abdominal pain.
- Pain in the abdomen during intercourse.
- Increase in body or facial hair.
- Irregularities in urination (frequent urination) or bowel movements.
- On internal examination, the gynecologist usually discovers bilaterally enlarged
cystic ovaries. Sometimes due to the excess weight the ovaries may not be revealed.
Diagnostic procedures
Sonography
Transvaginal sonography is especially useful in obese patients
Serum values
Luteinising Hormone (LH) levels or the ratio between LH : FSH (Follicle Stimulating
Hormone is > 3 : 1. There is usually reversal of Oestradiol : Oestrone ratio.
The Oestrone level is markedly low. Androstenedione is elevated. Serum testosterone
and DHEA-S may be marginally elevated.
Laparoscopy
Bilaterally polycystic ovaries are detected which is the characteristic feature
of PCOS or PCOD.
Diet & nutrition
A vegetarian diet is recommended especially a diet rich in foods that naurish the
liver.
- Beets
- Carrots
- Dark-green leafy vegetables
- Lemons
