Homeopathic treatment
Before delving into homeopathic treatment let us first discuss the conventional
or allopathic treatment available.
In allopathy most cases of ILD are treated with corticosteroids such as prednisolone
which have numerous side effects.
Then there are therapies such as the oxygen therapy which does not reverse the disease
progress but helps in improving the breathing process. Such therapies do not stop
the damage to the lungs but only give temporary relief.
The last option is the surgical process of lung transplantation which is for young
people who have not benefitted from other modes of treatment.
In homoeopathy treatment is directed towards the underlying cause of ILD or interstitial
lung disease.
In cases of ILD due to autoimmune disorders homeopathy helps in balancing the confused
immunity of the body so that it stops working against its own tissues thus correcting
the problem from the root and to certain extent prevents the lungs from further
scarring.
In cases of organic and inorganic drug related ILD homeopathy has an important role
to play. In such cases medicines help to restore the functioning of lung parenchyma
thus improving the breathing, pain in chest and dry cough.
Usually patients who come to me for treatment of ILD are already on allopathic medicines.
Ongoing allopathic treatment is not immediately stopped but is slowly tapered off
as the patient becomes better with my remedies.
There are 182 medicines in homoeopathy which give great relief in interstitial lung
disease or ILD and improve the damaged lung tissue. However, the correct choice
and resulting relief is a matter of experience and right judgement on the part of
an unbiased doctor. The treatment is decided after thorough case taking of the patient
thus remedies are tailor made unlike allopathy in which all patients receive the
same drugs although trade name may be different.

What is interstitial lung disease?
It is a group of lung diseases affecting the tissue and space around the air sacs
of the lungs.
There is diffuse thickening of the alveolar walls with inflammatory cells and exudates.
Slowly there is progressive loss of alveolar capillary gas exchange units over months
or even years.
Causes
- Sarcoidosis
- Exposure to organic dust
- Exposure to inorganic dust
- Exposure to irradiation
- Certain drugs
- Infections
- Cryptogenic fibrosingalveolitis
- Some forms of pulmonary eosinophilia
- Rare disorders such as histiocytosis
Symptoms
Interstitial lung disease has varying symptoms such as progressive shortness of
breath on exertion, dry hacking cough, cyanosis, and signs of pulmonary hypertension.
In most of the cases lymphadenopathy can also be observed.
There may be digital clubbing, restriction of lung expansion due to which respiratory
difficulty may arise.
Laboratory investigations
- No single lab test is diagnostic for a particular interstitial lung disease.
- ESR and CRP may be non-specifically elevated.
- Serological tests of some value:antinuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factors and so
on.
- Chest x- ray may show a fine reticular shadowing, reticulonodular or even a nodular
pattern of infiltration of the bases and peripherally.
- High resolution CT scan is extremely valuable in detecting early stage of the disease.
What are the precautions?
- Stop smoking and avoid going in the areas where people smoke.
- Avoid aerosols or perfumes that would irritate your respiratory system.
- Eat well.
- Keep your body active.
- Avoid household sprays containing ammonia and chloride.
- Avoid too humid spaces or too dry spaces.
- Strenuous activities causing breathlessness needs to be avoided.
- Dress warmly in cold weathers and avoid least exposure to dry cold winds.
- Keeping well with physical exercise to fight the disease.
- Diabetics need to control their sugar levels.
- Keep yourself calm; anxiety will just act as an exciting cause to the disease.
- Keep a proper position while sleeping.
- Keep a positive attitude.
