Homeopathic treatment
Before we consider the homeopathic treatment available for carpal tunnel syndrome
or CTS, let us first delve into the allopathic options available:
- Corticosteroid injections
- NSAID
- Gabapentin
- Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery
Corticosteroid injection may trigger allergic reaction in some patients. Other potential
side effects include pain, swelling, crystallization of medication inside the body.
Skin discoloration around the injection area, elevated blood sugar level, increased
susceptibility to infection may also arise.
Prolonged use of NSAIDs cause side effects such as stomach ulcers, tendency to easy
bleeding, high blood pressure and ultimately damage to kidney and liver.
Gabapentin usage may lead to ataxia, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, fever, nystagmus,
sedation, viral infection, diplopia, peripheral edema, amblyopia, xerostomia.
Carpel Tunnel Release Surgery is followed by swelling in hand post operation. Nerve
damage that existed prior to surgery can result in numbness post surgery; compromising
the ability to make full recovery in the hand. Nerve injury during surgery, complex
regional pain syndrome, hypertrophic and painful scars and recurrent CTS even after
surgery are other complications.
Homeopathy in CTS aims at treating the patient with holistic approach rather than
targeting just one or two symptoms.
In my clinical experience, patients generally experience relief within 3 to 7 weeks
of initiating the treatment. The difficulties patient feels in performing their
daily routines gradually lessen as the treatment proceeds. The sensation of burning,
numbness, paresthesia, tingling improve.
Remedies also target at the cause of CTS which may vary in each patient. They encourage
healing of injured tissues and bones preventing further deterioration of wrist joint
as well as releasing pressure on median nerve.
If started at the early stage the complications of CTS such as thinning of muscles
can be avoided. Along with the relief in physical symptoms, mental health and happiness
also elevate; thereby improving the quality of life of the patients.
Some of the remedies which have been found effective are Arnica, Ruta, Causticum,
Guaicum, Calcarea phos, Hypericum. [Note: Do not self medicate. Take your medications
exactly as prescribed by your doctor, including at the right time and full length
of your prescribed treatment.]

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or CTS?
CTS occurs when any of the nine long flexor tendons passing through carpel tunnel
swell or degenerate leading to compression or entrapment of median nerve resulting
in a group of symptoms mainly in lateral three and a half digits and wrist.
It is also known as Repetitive Stress Injury.
Symptoms
- Partial loss of sensitivity on the palmar aspect of lateral three and a half digits.
- Pain, numbness, burning, tingling in lateral three and a half digits including nail
bed and distal phalanges on the back of hand.
- Warmer and drier effected skin areas.
- Ape like thumb deformity.
- Partial claw hand
- Wasting of muscles at the base of thumb.
- Loss of grip of affected hand
- Dry, scaly skin, easy cracking of nails with atrophy of pulp of fingers
- Pain may be referred to forearm and arm.
- Symptoms are worse at night.
Cause
- Occurs in males and females between 25 to 70.
- Repetitive flexion and extension of wrist (meat cutting, prolonged key board use
and so on)
Risk Factors
- Diabetes
- Thyroid problems
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Wrist fracture
- OCPs
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
- Vitamin B6 deficiency
Management
- Take diet rich in vitamin C, E, B6.
